Swimming Pool Alarms for Final Inspection

Updated: Aug 3, 2023

As part of the final inspection process for your swimming pool, it is important to ensure that the necessary safety measures are in place, including the installation of swimming pool alarms. Swimming pool alarms are devices designed to enhance pool safety by providing early warning signs of potential accidents or unauthorized access to the pool area. These alarms can help prevent drowning incidents, especially in cases involving young children or individuals who are unable to swim.

Here are some key points to consider regarding swimming pool alarms for the final inspection:

1. Types of Pool Alarms:

  • Surface Wave Alarms: These alarms use sensors to detect surface disturbances caused by someone entering the pool. They are triggered by the ripples or waves created when a person enters the water.

  • Subsurface Motion Alarms: These alarms rely on underwater sensors to detect any movement or disturbances beneath the water's surface.

  • Perimeter Alarms: These alarms are installed around the pool area and use motion sensors or infrared technology to detect movement in the vicinity of the pool.

All home interior doors that open out to your yard and swimming pool will require to have a UL listed 2017 alarm installed. You will not be able to pass your final inspection without it.

All doors and windows providing direct access from the home to the pool shall be equipped with an exit alarm complying with UL 2017 that has a minimum sound pressure rating of 85 dB A at 10 feet (3048 mm). The exit alarm shall produce a continuous audible warning when the door and its screen are opened.

Below you will find UL listed 2017 alarms with links to purchase online.

2. Alarm Activation and Notification:

  • When a swimming pool alarm is triggered, it should produce a loud and distinct sound that can be easily heard both inside and outside the house.

  • Some pool alarms are designed to sound an audible alarm at the poolside, while others can be integrated with home security systems to trigger a broader alert.

  • In addition to the audible alarm, certain alarms can send alerts through mobile devices, notifying pool owners or authorized individuals about any detected activity in or around the pool.

3. Compliance with Regulations:

  • It is essential to ensure that the swimming pool alarms installed meet the regulations and requirements set forth by local authorities or building codes.

  • Consult with your local pool safety authorities or regulatory bodies to understand the specific guidelines and standards for pool alarms in your area.

  • Keep in mind that regulations may vary depending on factors such as pool size, type, location, and use.

ALARM REQUIREMENTS

  1. The alarm sound must last for 30 seconds or more and must trigger within seven seconds of the door / window opening,

  2. The alarm must be at minimum 85 dB from 10 feet away

  3. The alarm sound must be distinctly different from other alarms in the home such as smoke detectors.

  4. The alarm must automatically reset in all conditions.

  5. Any deactivation switch to allow adults to pass through the door should be mounted at minimum 54" above the ground.

4. Additional Safety Measures:

  • While swimming pool alarms are an important safety feature, they should not be considered as a standalone solution.

  • Implementing multiple layers of protection, such as pool fences or barriers, self-closing and self-latching gates, and pool covers, can further enhance pool safety.

  • Educate family members and pool users about water safety practices, including swimming skills, proper supervision, and knowledge of emergency procedures.

During the final inspection, the pool inspector will evaluate the installation and functionality of the swimming pool alarms. They will ensure that the alarms meet the necessary requirements and provide effective safety measures. It is important to work closely with the pool contractor and adhere to all guidelines and regulations to ensure a successful final inspection.

Remember, the primary goal of swimming pool alarms is to prevent accidents and enhance pool safety. By installing and properly maintaining these alarms, you can create a safer environment for everyone enjoying the pool.
